Safety in Suriname

Suriname is celebrated for its warm hospitality and stands as one of the most accessible and safe destinations in South America. To ensure a completely worry-free holiday, it is wise to follow a few general travel practices that are useful anywhere in the world.
✓ Alertness: Just like in any other country, be alert to pickpockets in crowded places such as markets or bus stations.
✓ Exploring on your own: Do you want to independently explore the deep, pristine jungle or the lesser-known neighborhoods of the city? For your own safety, always do so accompanied by a certified local guide, or gather information beforehand to check if it is safe to visit independently. Guides are fully aware of the current local conditions and will enrich your journey with their deep knowledge of nature and culture.
✓ Local interaction: Encounters with the Surinamese people are often the highlight of the journey; everyone is incredibly warm and quick to connect. In the city, you may occasionally be approached by someone looking for a chat or a small contribution. You are under no obligation whatsoever. In Suriname, it is completely standard and socially accepted to simply keep walking with a smile and a firm "no, thank you."

✓ Transportation after sunset: During the day, you can explore Paramaribo excellently on foot or by bicycle. However, I advise taking an official taxi for longer distances in the evening and outside the well-known, well-lit entertainment and dining zones. This is very affordable and brings you safely and comfortably from door to door.
✓ Valuables: Preferably leave eye-catching and valuable jewelry and large amounts of cash in your accommodation's safe. Only carry what you strictly need for the day.
With these tips, you can safely enjoy everything Suriname has to offer.
