Currency in Suriname
Proper preparation regarding money matters ensures a relaxed start to your journey. While the official currency is the Surinaamse Dollar (SRD), the local economy is highly adapted to foreign currencies. With these practical guidelines, you will be financially well-prepared, ensuring a completely worry-free holiday.
Payments and ATM withdrawals in Paramaribo
In Paramaribo, there are plenty of ATMs available. At most local ATMs, you can directly withdraw SRD using a European debit card (ensuring your card settings are activated for worldwide use). Please note: Make sure to manually change your debit card settings to 'Worldwide coverage' before departure; while this is automatically enabled by some banks, many others require you to activate it yourself for security reasons.
Although credit cards (particularly Visa and Mastercard) and digital payments are accepted in more and more places, this is often still limited to larger hotels and more upscale dining venues. Therefore, it is certainly not the general standard. Suriname truly has a cash culture; the payment infrastructure is simply not set up for card payments everywhere. At smaller shops, local eateries (warungs), taxi drivers, and markets, you can only pay with cash. As a traveler, make sure to always have enough cash on hand for your daily expenses. While withdrawing cash with a credit card is possible at banks, it does come with higher transaction fees.
Foreign Currency
Because foreign bank cards can face unexpected limitations due to local ATM withdrawal restrictions or temporary cash shortages, I advise carrying a substantial portion of your budget in cash Euros or US Dollars. Ensure you bring clean, undamaged bills in smaller denominations. This currency can easily be exchanged at official exchange offices (cambios) or hotels at current rates, or used directly for purchases at many tourist spots. Please note that any change is almost always returned in local SRD.
Financial matters in the interior
As soon as you leave Paramaribo and travel deeper into the interior or the jungle, the financial infrastructure changes completely. There are no ATMs or digital payment options available in the rainforest. Therefore, ensure you secure enough cash in both SRD and foreign currency for local expenditures, guides, souvenirs, or drinks.
