Day-to-Day Itinerary – 18-Day Family tour of Suriname
Day 1 - 4 Arrival & Explore Historic Paramaribo
ā
Upon arrival at Suriname’s international airport, you’ll be picked up and transferred to your accommodation, a small, welcoming lodge just outside the bustling city center. The cozy, personal atmosphere of the hotel provides the perfect setting to unwind and acclimatize.
ā
The hotel features a refreshing pool where you can cool off after your flight, and a charming terrace where you can enjoy a drink while the kids take a dip. There's also a small restaurant where you can enjoy a relaxed first meal in Suriname. Thanks to the hotel’s convenient location, restaurants, shops, and sights are easily accessible, allowing you to explore Paramaribo at your own pace.
ā
On Day 2, discover the unique atmosphere of the historic city center of Paramaribo during a City Tour. Marvel at the monumental wooden architecture around the Presidential Palace and the Waterkant, and visit the Mosque and Synagogue, standing peacefully side by side. You will also explore the bustling Central Market and discover the rich history of Fort Zeelandia—a complete tour along the iconic highlights of Paramaribo.
ā
Day 3 is dedicated to a water adventure. In the afternoon, you’ll board a boat for a leisurely cruise along the river. With your guide, you'll scan the waters in search of dolphins—a memorable experience for the whole family. The boat will dock at a former plantation village, where you can sample local treats and soak in the village atmosphere. On the way back, enjoy a colorful sunset over the water, an experience that will stay young and old forever.
Day 4 - 5 Bigi Pan Nature Reserve
ā
From Paramaribo, you’ll travel to the unique Bigi Pan Nature Reserve. On the way, you’ll pass through the lush Saramacca district, picturesque Coronie, and the vast rice fields of Nickerie.
ā
Bigi Pan is an officially protected nature reserve and wetland area of 67,000 hectares, rich in flora and fauna, including flamingos, red ibises, and other extraordinary coastal birds. Explore the area with a local guide, searching for flamingos, red ibises, and perhaps even a caiman.
ā
You’ll stay in a stylish, standalone lodge built on stilts over the water. From your private balcony, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the lake, where the colors of the sky and water constantly change. A unique place to experience the magic of this nature reserve in full comfort and style.
Day 5 - 7: Bloemendaal Apartments, Groningen
ā
After the adventure of Bigi Pan, it's time to relax along the Saramacca River. You'll spend two nights at the small-scale and child-friendly Bloemendaal Apartments, a wonderful place with a swimming pool and plenty of space to play or simply relax.
ā
During the day, you can explore the village of Groningen, a peaceful place with a friendly atmosphere. Those looking for adventure can join a boat trip on the river to spot monkeys and colorful birds. Also fun for the kids: a visit to the sloth rescue center, where you can see these relaxed animals up close. In the evenings, the resident chef cooks delicious local dishes—dining by the water tastes extra good here!
ā
On Day 7, you’ll travel to Peperpot for the next leg of your family adventure.
Day 7 - 9 Peperpot
ā
For the next two nights, you’ll stay at a unique location in Commewijne, close to the historic plantations along the Suriname River and directly on the edge of the Peperpot Nature Park.
ā
The small-scale accommodation combines modern comforts with a colonial charm, making it eminently suitable for families. There’s plenty of space for the kids to play, a pool to cool off in, and activities like cycling or kayaking to enjoy together in nature.
You’ll stay in a comfortable room in one of the beautifully restored buildings that were once part of the plantations. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored plantation building, where you can enjoy local dishes together.
Day 8 Peperpot evening tour
ā
When evening falls, head out with an experienced guide for a walk through the adjacent nature park. In the mystical twilight, the forest comes to life as you search for the many nocturnal animals that live here. Make sure to wear closed shoes, as the tour takes you over unpaved paths deep into nature.
ā
Together with your guide, you will search for wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, snakes, and various species of frogs and spiders. You will learn all about their unique behavior at night before returning to your accommodation at the end of the evening.
Day 9 - 11 Galibi
āā
You travel to the northeast of Suriname for a visit to the coastal area of Galibi. Along the way, you will make an excursion to the other side of the border river: Saint-Laurent in French Guiana. Here you can visit the local market and discover the impressive history of the old prison.
In Galibi, you’ll stay for 2 nights in a simple but charming accommodation in the middle of an authentic indigenous village. Together with a guide, you will explore the village and gain a unique insight into daily life along the Marowijne River.
ā
The absolute highlight is the evening boat trip to the sea turtle nesting beaches. Of course, it remains an encounter with wildlife, but with a bit of luck, you will see these huge creatures coming out of the sea to lay their eggs—a magical moment that young and old will not soon forget. After 2 nights, the journey returns to Paramaribo for the next part of your family adventure.
ā
Day 11 - 13 ParamariboāØ
ā
Time to catch your breath! You’ll have a full free day in Paramaribo, with no scheduled activities. Discover the city at your own pace: for example, visit the local zoo, stroll through the palm garden, or simply enjoy a relaxing day by the pool. This allows you to decide how to spend your day and quietly unwind from all the adventures so far.
ā
Day 13 - 16 Upper Suriname River & Maroon Culture for FamiliesāØ
ā
You travel to the heart of the Upper Suriname River, where you will stay at a small-scale resort that is extremely suitable for families. To keep the adventure relaxed for everyone, the cabins feature great comforts such as air conditioning and hot water. From your private balcony, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the river, while the swimming pool on the property is the perfect place for the children to play and for you to completely unwind after an active day.
ā
Together with a guide who knows the jungle inside out, you will head into nature. You will learn about the extraordinary plants and animals and get to know the rich traditions of the Maroon communities in the surrounding villages. For the real adventurers, there is a thrilling evening boat trip where you search with a flashlight for caimans hiding along the riverbanks and other nocturnally active animals.
āIn between activities, there is plenty of room for relaxation: take a refreshing dip in the pool or in the small rapid in the river, enjoy the view from your balcony, or let the kids play in nature and simply enjoy the jungle sounds, such as the impressive howler monkeys, around you. This family-friendly jungle experience combines adventure, culture, and tranquility, so that the whole family can fully enjoy the magic of the Surinamese interior.
Day 16 - 18 Palulu Nature Lodging
ā
The round trip through Suriname concludes with 2 nights at Palulu, a charming and small-scale resort in the middle of the jungle that is perfect for families. The comfortable cabanas are equipped with air conditioning, hot/cold water, and a private terrace.
ā
Together with the kids, you can take a refreshing swim in the cola-colored creek, relax in the hammock, or simply enjoy the peace and nature around you.
